Worlds Fair Park

There are several things that make Knoxville what it is, but one of those things is the Sunsphere. Every time I've been away and I drive back into town and see that glowing golden tower, I know that I'm home. I love World's Fair Park downtown and the kids love to go up inside the Sunsphere, so yesterday we took Paul, Meghan, and Violet to check it out. Our first stop was the playground.

The kids had a blast. The big kids played too...

Savannah loves to climb so the rock wall is perfect for her...all the way to the top with just a little help!

Meg made it to the top too!

Isn't my niece just the cutest thing ever?

There are lots of pools and fountains at the park. (In the summer the kids can play in the large fountain in front of the lawn.) We took a few minutes to enjoy. The weather was perfect!

Heading to the Sunsphere.

Time to go up inside!

Just a little history lesson...the Sunsphere was constructed to be the symbol of the 1982 World's Fair which was held right here in Knoxville. (The glass panels are layered in 24-karat gold dust!) During the fair it cost $2 to ride the elevator to the observation deck and there was a full service restaurant on the top floor. After being closed for years the observation deck re-opened just a few years ago and is now free to the public.

Several stations inside the sphere detail the history of the structure as well as various parts of Knoxville!

Great views of downtown.

If you've never visited World's Fair park and you live in the area I highly recommend checking it out! There are several places to picnic, beautiful spots for pictures, and its an easy walk to Market Square or Gay Street for shopping or eating. Follow this link for directions and hours! I always up for free family fun in my hometown!

P.S. I have added a new label, "Around K-town" to highlight some of the great places and things to do in Knoxville. Hope to continue adding to it.
